Home of Diversity

CO_AFRO Community Center

The CO-AFRO Community Center, also known as the Congolese and African Community Center, is the "Home of Diversity." Our center was initiated to provide a place where communities can come together to address significant challenges, decrease obstacles, and increase opportunities.

About CO_AFRO Community Center

Our History

The CO-AFRO Community Center was founded in early 2014 by Salemu D. Alimasi, who was working as a caseworker with a resettlement agency in Houston at the time. Salemu recognized a significant gap in the resettlement process, noting that the youth population was often overlooked. This oversight led to substantial challenges in their integration journey, as these young individuals were not included in critical decision-making processes. Salemu founded the CO-AFRO Community Center to change this narrative, creating a space where the contributions of refugees and immigrants, especially the youth, would be recognized and celebrated.
