Our center stands with Refugees and immigrant communities by Removing barriers, Creating opportunities, and Fostering unity—honoring their cultures and equipping them with the tools to belong, thrive, and lead.
About CO_AFRO Community Center
Our History
In 2014, CO-AFRO was born from a gap that was too important to ignore.
While serving as a refugee resettlement caseworker in Houston, Salemu Alimasi, himself a former refugee, saw refugee and immigrant communities—especially young people—struggling to build strong bridges to integration, education, belonging, empowerment, and cultural connection.
Families were navigating new communities, schools, and cultures, yet too often, their voices and contributions were missing from the conversations shaping their lives.
CO-AFRO began to change that—to create space for voices to be heard, generations to connect, cultures to be celebrated, and communities to thrive.

Our Citizen Voices Program supports Eligible to Naturalize (ETN) community members through the naturalization process with trained Community Navigators who speak your language, understand your culture, and walk with you from start to finish.
Do you speak Swahili, French, Kirundi, Kinyarwanda, Arabic, or Sango? Are you from East, North, Central, or South Africa, or elsewhere? We speak your language. We understand your culture.
